Olowu of Owu Inaugurated as Mega Champion for HPV Vaccine Advocacy in Ogun
In a move to strengthen the fight against cervical cancer and boost immunization coverage in Ogun State, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Prof.) Saka Adelola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, has been officially inaugurated as a Mega Champion for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine campaign.
The inauguration, held at Conference Hotel in Abeokuta, marked a significant step in harnessing traditional leadership to drive grassroots health initiatives, particularly in increasing awareness and uptake of the HPV vaccine among young girls.
As a revered traditional ruler and a highly respected academic, Oba Matemilola brings not only influence but also a deep understanding of public health advocacy to the table. Speaking at the event, he reflected on the urgency of the mission and the need for collaborative action.
“I attended a conference in Akure on immunization and health-related issues. When the result for immunization was presented, Ogun State was among the states that had the lowest turnout amidst all others, which should not be so. I commend the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, on this initiative, and I hope to see more of it,” Oba Matemilola said.
As a Mega Champion, the Olowu will to use his platform to educate communities, dispel myths surrounding the HPV vaccine, and encourage parents to ensure their daughters are vaccinated. His involvement will significantly influence public perception and community participation, especially in rural areas.
Health stakeholders, community leaders, and civil society organizations present at the inauguration pledged their full support to the champions and reiterated their commitment to achieving full immunization coverage in Ogun State.
The HPV vaccine initiative is part of a broader effort by the state government to reduce preventable diseases and promote a healthier future for every child.
